(Imagine that high pitch here) as local Costa Ricans prepare for an annual celebration known as Desfile de Los Faroles aka Parade of Lanterns on Saturday, Sept. 14 in Lawrence Twp. The event occurs from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. near the 1800 block of Princeton Ave.
Event planners expect hundreds as Ticos celebrate Costa Rica’s independence with a parade of homemade lanterns, music, food, and fun.

The celebration connects to 1953 when Professor Victor Manuel Ureña, then provincial director of schools, who believed a lantern procession could instill civic spirit in children.
Legend notes on September 14, 1821, Costa Ricans awaited news of potential independence from Spain. A Guatemalan woman named María Dolores Bedoya ran through the streets of Antigua, Guatemala.
She held a lantern and implored residents of the town to meet in the plaza for an impromptu rally for freedom. They waited all through the night as lanterns glowed against the darkness.
So, on Independence Day eve, Costa Ricans burn lanterns that commemorate the day that their nation separated from Spain, along with other Spanish-speaking countries in Central America to the north — Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
A key part of the event occurs promptly at 6 p.m. when Costa Ricans sing their national anthem.
Lyrics of the Costa Rican National Anthem:
¡Noble patria!, tu hermosa bandera
expresión de tu vida nos da;
bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo
blanca y pura descansa la paz.
En la lucha tenaz, de fecunda labor,
que enrojece del hombre la faz; conquistaron tus hijos, labriegos sencillos,
eterno prestigio, estima y honor.
¡Salve, oh tierra gentil!
¡Salve, oh madre de amor!
Cuando alguno pretenda tu gloria manchar,
verás a tu pueblo, valiente y viril,
la tosca herramienta en arma trocar.
¡Salve, oh patria!, tu pródigo suelo
dulce abrigo y sustento nos da;
bajo el límpido azul de tu cielo,
¡vivan siempre el trabajo y la paz!
English Translation:
Noble fatherland! Your beautiful flag

your children, simple peasants, conquered
eternal prestige, esteem and honour.

the rustic tool turn into a weapon.
