Costa Rica is a stunning paradise with lush rainforests, gorgeous beaches, mountain views, roaming wildlife, and natural adventures around every corner. It’s no wonder people keep returning to this peaceful and friendly country in Central America.

“Costa Rica has experienced a remarkable rise in tourism, reporting a 14.5% increase in visitors during the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.” – Travel and World Tour

Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection in Costa Rica enhances this growth by offering guests immersive, elevated, and seamless all-inclusive experiences at their resorts, including Secrets Papagayo Costa Rica, a luxurious adults-only escape.

Secrets Papagayo in Guanacaste is located on the gorgeous black, volcanic sand beach of Papagayo Bay surrounded by stunning mountains and tropical forests. This lush atmosphere is packed with diverse flora and fauna of the northwestern coast and feels totally secluded, despite being close to excursions and attractions, and half an hour from the Liberia Airport.

Barra Honda National Park is also impressive with a unique system of caves with stalactite and stalagmite formations and limestone caverns. Or head to downtown Liberia to shop for authentic treasures.

Restaurants and bars are world class with outstanding food. With seven diverse dining options you are guaranteed to find something you love that’s either a la carte, buffet style, or poolside, and no reservations are required. We began our days at Coco Café with oat milk lattes and then headed to Market Café for fresh fruit, smoothies, and breakfast items. We loved Aqua Cuisine for not only the top-notch masterpieces but the incredible view. Aqua serves healthy style meals like soups and salads created using fresh local ingredients such as their beet and pumpkin carpaccio. As vegans, we were thrilled with the plant-based options provided by talented and friendly Chef Michelle Heriquez. The resort caters to dietary restrictions and allergies.

This elegant restaurant has a formal dress code and is the perfect spot for a night out, with international wines available. Other dining options include Himitsu, specializing in a fusion of Pan-Asian cuisine; Seaside Grill for quick bites by the pool, and Barefoot Grill for snacks. On our last day Chef Michelle whipped us up traditional Costa Rican dishes vegan style. We devoured plantain, potatoes, rice, beans, and delicious plant-based empanadas.

Exploring Costa Rica

Diamante Eco Adventure Park sign in Costa Rica by Miriam Porter

Amstar, part of the Hyatt family, provides exceptional excursion and transport services with representatives on site helping guests choose tours. Amstar has ICT Sustainable Tourism Certification and Ecologic Blue Flag status, and we choose their Diamante Adventure Pass excursion.

Diamante Eco Adventure Park is packed with adventures and our first thrilling activity was zip lining. We soared through the air on the longest dual action zip line in the country. They also boast an adrenaline inducing course featuring a 4,000-foot ‘Superman’ line with views of the Pacific Ocean – not for the faint of heart.

Diamante’s Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the largest variety of species in one location.

Interesting Fact: Costa Rica was the first country in the world to close all state zoos, with remaining animals going to a wildlife center for assessment, and then either released into the wild or moved to a sanctuary.

Animals at Diamante include reptiles, birds, monkeys, frogs, jaguars, pumas, deer, and a very special 13-year-old rescued sloth named Lucy.

“Lucy’s adventure started when she was found hanging out on an electrical wire. With burn scars on her little paws, it was clear she had survived some close calls. Fortunately, she was rescued and taken to a rescue center in San José, where it was decided she needed a safer place to call home. Now, Lucy enjoys her days at Diamante, winning over visitors with her gentle nature and inspiring them to learn about wildlife conservation. ” – Luciana Smania, Diamante Eco Adventure Park

Diamante’s Botanical Gardens has medicinal plants, fruit trees, and vibrant flowers. We saw wild plantain trees and an orange flowering Heliconia Psittcorum, an herb related to bananas known as parrot’s flower. The Traditional Farmhouse or “Casita” is built to replicate the style and materials used over a hundred years ago by farmers. We sipped freshly ground coffee brewed by pouring hot water over a cloth and ground our own cocoa beans for a sweet chocolate treat. Staff taught us how to maneuver a sugarcane press to produce sweet water called “Agua Dulce.”

Learning about Costa Rican traditions and immersing in the culture is a great way to gain a deeper understanding of the destination. But after a day out exploring, it was nice to return to beautiful Secrets Papagayo and be greeted by friendly smiling staff saying, “Welcome home.”
