Gustavo Alfaro has stepped down as the head coach of the Costa Rica national soccer team after a stint lasting just nine months, a source from his coaching staff revealed to Reuters on Friday.
Alfaro, who is Argentine, is reportedly in contention to replace Daniel Garnero as the head coach of the Paraguay national team, as per Argentine media reports. “He is no longer the coach, he has agreed to leave,” a source close to Alfaro stated, without providing reasons for his departure.
During his tenure, the 61-year-old led Costa Rica in the recent Copa America, where they were eliminated in the group stage by finishing third. Previously, Alfaro managed to guide Ecuador to the World Cup in Qatar in 2022. The Costa Rican Football Federation has not yet made an official announcement regarding his resignation.
