Gustavo Alfaro has resigned as the head coach of Costa Rica’s national soccer team after a tenure of nine months, according to an official announcement by the country’s soccer federation on Friday.
The 61-year-old Argentine is reportedly in contention to succeed Daniel Garnero as Paraguay’s manager, as per Argentine media. Alfaro recently led Costa Rica in this year’s Copa America, where the team was eliminated in the group stage after finishing third. He previously guided Ecuador to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
The federation expressed gratitude for Alfaro’s efforts in a statement: ‘We thank Mr. Gustavo and his team for their dedication during their time leading the Costa Rica team. At FCRF we will continue to build the path towards the 2026 World Cup. We will keep our fans informed and reiterate our commitment to continue working for the development and success of national football.’
