And There’s More… Tropics Hopping!

BOCA RATON, FL (BocaNewsNow.com) (Copyright © 2024 MetroDesk Media, LLC) — Nothing to worry about for the next several days but there are new systems forming east and west of Florida. In the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Joyce was born on Friday. It is likely to loop away from Florida, but is certainly something to keep an eye on. As is the system to the east of Joyce. Back in the Gulf, there is a new area of interest that is something to watch, as well. All this as the remains of Helene continue to move north. Here’s the Friday afternoon update from the NHC:

Tropical Weather Discussion for North America, Central America Gulf of Mexico, Caribbean Sea, northern sections of South America, and Atlantic Ocean to the African coast from the Equator to 31N. The following information is based on satellite imagery, weather observations, radar and meteorological analysis.
Based on 1200 UTC surface analysis and satellite imagery through 1600 UTC.
… SPECIAL FEATURES…
Newly formed Tropical Storm Joyce is centered near 18.1N 42.9W at 27/1500 UTC or 1150 nm E of the Northern Leeward Islands, and moving NW at 11 kt. Estimated minimum central pressure is 1006 mb. Maximum sustained winds are 35 kt with gusts to 45 kt. Peak seas at 12 to 13 ft extend 30 nm in a northern semicircle from the center. Scattered moderate to isolated strong convection is seen up to 100 nm in a northern semicircle from the center. Joyce is expected to continue moving NW through Sunday with a gradually decrease in forward speed, then turn toward the N on Monday. Some slow strengthening in forecast through Saturday before a gradual weakening early next week.

… TROPICAL WAVES…
An eastern Atlantic tropical wave is near 26W from 20N southward, and moving westward around 10 kt. Widely scattered moderate convection is noted from 11N to 16N between 21W and 27W.
A central Atlantic tropical wave located near 42W earlier has been absorbed by newly formed Tropical Storm Joyce mentioned in the Special Features section.
An eastern Caribbean tropical wave is near 68W from near the Mona Passage southward to north-central Venezuela. It is moving westward at 15 to 20 kt. Scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms are noted over the northeastern Caribbean Sea, including waters near the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
… MONSOON TROUGH/ITCZ…
A monsoon trough enters the Atlantic along the Senegal coast just south of Dakar, then runs westward to 15N30W before turning southwestward to 12N36W. An ITCZ continues southwestward from 12N36W to 07N52W. Convergent westerly winds well south of the trough are causing scattered moderate convection from 02N to 06N between 17W and 28W. Widely scattered moderate convection is occurring up to 80 north and 200 nm south of the ITCZ.
The eastern end of the East Pacific monsoon trough is triggering isolated thunderstorms across the Caribbean waters near Costa Rica, Panama and northwestern Colombia.
… GULF OF MEXICO…
A forming cold front extends southward from eastern Georgia to northeastern Florida, then continues southwestward as a surface trough to near Tampico, Mexico. Widely scattered showers are seen up t 60 nm along either side of the trough west of 86W. Fresh to strong westerly winds and seas of 8 to 10 ft are lingering offshore from the Florida Big Bend area. Moderate to fresh W to NW winds and 6 to 7 ft seas are present at the rest of the northeastern Gulf. Gentle to moderate with locally fresh SW to W winds and seas at 4 to 7 ft are noted across the southeastern Gulf, including the Florida Straits. Mostly gentle SW to NW winds with 3 to 6 ft seas prevail elsewhere into Gulf.
For the forecast, strong winds and rough seas over the northeastern Gulf will subside further this afternoon into tonight. Afterward, light to gentle winds and slight seas will prevail across the Gulf Sat through early next week.
… CARIBBEAN SEA…
An upper-level trough stretches southwestward from the Florida Straits across the Yucatan Channel to near Belize. It is triggering widely scattered moderate convection across the northwestern basin, including the Gulf of Honduras. Refer to the Tropical Waves and Monsoon Trough/ITCZ sections for additional convection in the Caribbean Sea. Gentle to moderate SSE to E winds and seas at 4 to 6 ft are evident across the northeastern and north-central basin, and near the Cayman Islands. Light to gentle winds and 1 to 3 ft seas are noted near Costa Rica and Panama. Gentle SE to S winds with seas at 2 to 4 ft prevail for the rest of the Caribbean Sea.
For the forecast, winds across the northwestern basin are gentle to moderate with slight to moderate seas. THese conditions will persist across the basin through early next week.
… ATLANTIC OCEAN…

An upper-level trough curves southwestward from the central Atlantic across 31N49W to near the northern Leeward Islands. Scattered moderate convection is found south of this feature north of 26N between 40W and 50W. Convergent southerly winds are producing widely scattered moderate convection north of 27N between 75W and the Georgia/northeastern Florida coast. Refer to the Tropical Waves and Monsoon Trough/ITCZ sections for additional convection in the Atlantic Basin.
Fresh to strong southerly winds with 8 to 12 ft seas are evident offshore of Florida and near the northwest Bahamas. Moderate of fresh ENE to E winds and seas of 6 to 8 ft are found from 20N to 25N between 35W and 45W. Otherwise, gentle to moderate E to SSW winds and seas at 4 to 6 ft exist north of 20N between 35W and the Florida/Georgia coast. Outside the direct influence of newly formed Tropical Storm Joyce, gentle to moderate NE to SE winds and 4 to 6 ft seas persist from 10N to 20N between 35W and the Lesser Antilles. Gentle to moderate with locally fresh southerly winds and seas of 5 to 7 ft in mixed moderate swells prevail for the remainder of the Atlantic Basin.
For the forecast W of 55W, winds off the Florida east coast will improve this afternoon into tonight, with seas subsiding below 8 ft by tonight. Elsewhere, Hurricane Isaac is near 37.4N 46.8W at 11 AM EDT, and is moving east-northeast at 16 kt. Maximum sustained winds are 65 kt with gusts to 80 kt, and the minimum central pressure is 981 mb. Issac will continue moving away from the area, but generate N swell that will propagate into waters north of 30N and east of 60W, producing seas near 8 ft today.
