Former Mexico head coach Miguel “Piojo” Herrera has been appointed as the new manager of the Costa Rican men’s national team, the federation announced on Tuesday.
“Following an exhaustive search process that concluded with a short list,” the federation’s press release said, “the executive committee of the (Costa Rican football federation) made the decision to name Herrera as the national team’s manager.”
Herrera’s tenure as Mexico’s manager between 2013-2015 was a successful one but was also marked by off-field drama. He led El Tri to the round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup and won the Gold Cup in 2015 but was fired just days after winning that title after a violent confrontation with a journalist.
More recently, Herrera has had stays at Liga MX sides Club Tijuana and Tigres. He’s perhaps best known for his success at Mexican powerhouse Club America, where he won half-season titles in 2013 and 2018. The 56-year old journeyman has additionally coached for stretches at Atlante, Monterrey, Veracruz and Tecos.
Herrera is in many ways known as much for his fiery personality as anything else — he has frequently been red carded over the years. He was ejected from Club America’s 2020 CONCACAF Champions League semifinal loss to Major League Soccer side LAFC after a halftime physical altercation with an opposing coach and was fired in the days that followed. At Tijuana, Herrera served a five-match ban for an altercation with a fan.
Prior to his career as a coach Herrera had a lengthy and successful playing career at the club level. He also represented Mexico in qualifiers for the 1994 World Cup, though he was omitted from the squad that represented that country at the tournament itself.
Herrera will be publicly presented as Costa Rica’s manager in the coming days, the Costa Rican federation said in its release. The United States men’s national team faces Costa Rica in a friendly on July 22.
