Nokia, RACSA Launch Costa Rica’s First 5G Standalone Network

Nokia and Radiográfica Costarricense SA (RACSA), a Grupo ICE company, have successfully deployed Costa Rica’s first 5G standalone (SA) network. This landmark project brings high-speed, low-latency 5G connectivity to major urban areas, including San Jose, Cartago, and Limon, as well as various rural regions across the country. The deployment marks a major step forward in Costa Rica’s digital transformation journey, with an initial phase involving 30 sites in key cities, and a further 170 sites expected later this year, leading to an expansion of up to 500 sites in future phases.

The new 5G network will enable faster internet speeds and support the development of IoT applications that benefit both enterprises and consumers, particularly in public safety, energy, healthcare, and education sectors. This advanced network infrastructure aims to foster economic growth, promote digital inclusion, and enhance essential public services nationwide. Additionally, the network provides high-performance Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) services for a variety of users, including small and medium enterprises, government entities, and consumers. As a flexible connectivity solution, FWA can provide high-speed internet to areas lacking existing telecom infrastructure, and its usage is anticipated to outpace other broadband solutions significantly over the next decade, according to GSMA Intelligence.

Supported by Nokia’s integrator partner, Datasys, RACSA has incorporated Nokia’s leading AirScale radio technology, including Massive MIMO radios, remote radio heads, and base stations. Nokia’s MantaRay Network Management solutions will deliver a cohesive and automated network view, bolstering monitoring and management capabilities. RACSA is also deploying Nokia’s FastMile 5G Receivers and other Nokia solutions to strengthen connectivity for end-users. To support the 5G SA RAN architecture, Nokia’s Compact Mobility Unit (CMU) Core has been integrated, ensuring a high-performance and reliable network.

Mauricio Barrantes, General Manager, RACSA

The utilization of Nokia technology represents a pivotal step in Costa Rica’s digital transformation which RACSA has been playing a key role in for the last 103 years. By deploying the first 5G network in the country, we are not only improving connectivity for businesses and government entities but also enhancing the quality of life for our citizens. The high-speed, reliable network will support innovative applications that contribute to the country’s overall economic and social development.
