MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus has passed a statement in favor of ending the economic, trade, and financial embargo introduced by the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba, BelTA has learned.
The day before the text of the statement was discussed by the eighth-convocation Council of the Republic of the National Assembly. Today the session of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly passed the resolution “On the statement of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus on the need to end the economic, trade, and financial embargo introduced by the United States of America against the Republic of Cuba”.
“The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus welcomes the constant attention of the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization to the matter of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo imposed by the United States of America against Cuba and the adoption of the resolution with the same name at the 79th session of the Assembly,” the statement reads. “The parliament of the Republic of Belarus has persistently advocated the lifting of the embargo against Cuba and strongly condemns the illegal policy of sanctions against the friendly Cuban people, which we regard as a gross violation of principles and norms of international law as formulated by the UN Charter.”
The embargo negatively affects the country’s development and violates human rights, the MPs noted. “Consequences of the economic embargo against Cuba limit opportunities for the country’s economic growth, deter foreign investment, impede trade relations with third countries, and violate the legitimate right of states to cooperate with Havana in full. Restrictions in the field of trade, foreign exchange, banking, and tourism continue adversely affecting the well-being of the population. We express solidarity with the Cuban people and reaffirm our dedication to promoting the further strengthening of political, economic, and cultural ties between the Republic of Belarus and the Republic of Cuba,” the parliamentarians emphasized.
“The National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus calls for a complete and unconditional end to the embargo against Cuba and for the international community to take effective steps to prohibit the use of unilateral coercive measures as unlawful from the point of view of international law,” the statement reads.
