Cuba is Trying to Influence Florida Elections, US Official Claims

There are rumblings of an attempt by the Cuban government to influence the upcoming elections in Florida, the state with the largest Cuban community in the US.

An unnamed intelligence officer told the Miami Herald that signs of Cuban influence were detected in Florida.

“I can say that the Cuban government is conducting localized influence operations that are much more narrowly focused on opposing anti-regime candidates in the United States,” the official, who works at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, told the paper.

The Cuban regime is being indiscriminate in its alleged attempts at influence, targeting politicians in both the Republican and Democratic parties.

Cuban agents reportedly begin by cultivating relationships with Americans critical of their government, before establishing a network of social media users to disseminate “derogatory content” about US politicians perceived as hostile to Cuba.

Although Cuba’s influence campaign may seem modest compared to those orchestrated by Russia, China and Iran, analysts caution that the United States should not underestimate its significance. Recent observations have revealed Cuban influencers endorsing Russian disinformation concerning the conflict in Ukraine.

China has been actively involved in the development of internet and cybersecurity infrastructure in Cuba for some time.

Recent reports indicate that Russia is contributing in this domain too. It’s been alleged that the Russian government is also enhancing Cuba’s AI capabilities.
