Mexico.- The Dominican Republic U-23 women’s volleyball team defeated Cuba 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-20), advancing to the semifinals of the Pan American Cup in Xalapa, Veracruz, Mexico.
With a perfect 3-0 record, the Dominican team secured a direct spot in the semifinals and will rest while awaiting the result of the quarter-final match between Peru and Chile. Meanwhile, Cuba (2-1) will face Nicaragua in the quarter-finals.
Despite Cuba leading in attacks (39-38) and services (3-2), the Dominican Republic dominated in blocks (6-4) and committed fewer errors (19-29). Alondra Tapia was the standout player for the Dominicans, scoring 25 points. Yalain De La Peña and Whitney James led Cuba with 12 and 11 points, respectively. In the first set, the Dominican Republic overcame a five-point deficit to gain control.
In the second set, the Dominican team took an early lead and, despite a tight finish, extended their advantage to two sets. The third set saw the Dominicans jump to a quick 12-3 lead, but Cuba fought back before Ailyn Liberato sealed the victory. Dominican coach Wagner Pacheco praised the team’s performance, acknowledging the challenge posed by the inexperience of some of his younger players, who were competing at this level for the first time.
