Enjoy Your Family, But Be Prepared

"Enjoy Your Family, But Be Prepared"

“In Cuba right now, there are blackouts lasting 13, 18, or even over 20 hours, with just a few hours of electricity in between. And the mosquitoes, man, they’re relentless. There are insects I can’t even name, but they all bite,” explained a Cuban living in the United States after a recent trip to the island to visit family. In his message, he warned those planning a visit to be prepared: “Buy a generator, take 20 liters of repellent. Don’t say I didn’t warn you about the situation. I’m telling you: it’s really bad.”

He described the conditions in Cuba as extremely difficult, even for those with financial means. “I always managed to get things on the side, with money under the table, and even that doesn’t work now. Even with cash, it’s tough. If you go, do it for your family, enjoy their company, but don’t complain or act surprised about how bad things are.”

Although he emphasized that being with loved ones makes the trip worthwhile, he also cautioned: “You’ll have wonderful days with your family, but you’ll also encounter harsh realities you might not want to face.”

The Reality of Visiting Cuba: Challenges and Family Ties

The creator of the video, known as i.am.ivey on TikTok, clarified that he doesn’t oppose traveling to Cuba, but stressed the importance of being ready to handle the endless blackouts and shortages. “It’s tough, really tough. I enjoyed my family, but don’t pretend you didn’t know.”

His video sparked a wave of reactions. Many users agreed that despite the harsh conditions, family remains paramount. “I spent 15 days, 4 without electricity or water, but I was happy with my family,” one person shared. “When you’re with family, the blackout doesn’t matter,” asserted another. Someone else joked, “You forgot to mention bringing boxes of lexatin; I go to Cuba and leave the stress on the plane.”

Community Responses and Diverging Views

Others recalled their own challenges on the island: “I returned from Cuba four days ago. The only bad thing is the blackouts. There’s food, but it’s super expensive.” Another noted, “I went with a generator and rechargeable fan, and had no problem, but it’s true the bugs are biting.”

However, some didn’t share his view: “Why do you talk so much? Let us experience it for ourselves,” said one. “Cuba has never been great, but you go to be with your loved ones,” added another.

Despite the criticism, i.am.ivey’s message resonated deeply among Cubans. While some prefer to avoid the trip, others insist that nothing will stop them from being with their family, even if it means facing mosquitoes, heat, power outages, and bitter realities.
