Panamanian artists participating in a cultural evening organised by the Cuban embassy rejected the blockade imposed on the island by the United States, which they considered to be the greatest obstacle to its development.
In declarations to Prensa Latina, the singer-songwriter Adalberto Bazán indicated that the economic, commercial and financial siege is more than 60 years old and has failed in its objective of asphyxiating a heroic people, worthy of their creative resistance.
The director of the musical group Matices also described the blockade as inhumane because it violates the basic rights of the families of the largest of the Antilles.
He also considered that this type of cultural meeting, sponsored by the diplomatic legation headed by Víctor Cairo, contributes to generating greater knowledge among artists and intellectuals, but also solidarity towards this noble cause and the international call for Washington to put an end to the hostile policy.
The day before, the Cuban Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez, released the report Necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba, which will be presented next October for approval by the United Nations General Assembly.
According to Rodríguez, the US blockade constitutes the most ruthless, comprehensive and prolonged economic warfare policy ever imposed on any country.
The document states that, as a consequence of this policy, Cuba suffered losses of five thousand 56.8 million dollars from 1 March 2023 to 29 February 2024, which represents an increase of almost 200 million dollars compared to the previous report.
In the absence of such a policy, the island’s Gross Domestic Product could have grown by eight percent during 2023, he stressed.
He also pointed out that the arbitrary inclusion of the island on the State Department’s list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism deepens the difficulties and significantly affects Cuban families.
Cuba is not alone in confronting this multidimensional siege, Rodríguez recalled, pointing out that since 1992, the international community has ratified its rejection of this policy, which was reinforced to unprecedented levels during the impact of Covid-19.
