New Latin American Cinema festival begins in Cuba

Havana, Dec 5 (RHC) The 45th Havana International Film Festival of New Latin American Cinema opens today at the Charles Chaplin Hall, with the Argentinian feature film “More People Die on Sundays” by Iair Said.

The event, which takes place every December in Havana and other Cuban cities, returns this year with new features in terms of categories, invited personalities, and countries.

Out of the 2017 works received, 256 were selected from 42 countries (21 being from Latin America).

The highlight of the festival is the world premiere of the first two chapters of the Netflix series One Hundred Years of Solitude, adapted from Gabriel García Márquez’s masterpiece. The screening will take place this Friday at 8:00 p.m. at the Yara cinema in Havana’s Vedado neighborhood.

Restored classics will also be presented, this year with two titles from Argentina, a country to which a special tribute and section will be dedicated at the event.

One of them is La tregua, directed by Sergio Renant and based on the homonymous play by Mario Benedetti; and Camila, directed by María Luisa Bemberg and winner of the Coral prize.

The edition of the festival will feature a film sample from Palestine. Other novelties are the book Animation and Comics of the Life of Juan Padrón, as well as the event’s participation on Cuban television, exhibitions, and book presentations.

The Havana International Film Festival will conclude on December 15. Two days before, the awards ceremony will be held at noon, and at night, the closing gala with the Coral Awards. (Source: Prensa Latina)
