We must hope President Donald Trump and his Cabinet quickly come to realize the extent to which their behavior seems to threaten weakening our national defense, accelerating the worst kinds of economic disruption, and further undermining our flagging hopes for domestic tranquility.
Roughly 61 years ago, President John F. Kennedy deterred Soviet missile shipments that were then en route to Cuba, a frequently distressed nation located not far from our shores, where the Gulf of America (formerly, the Gulf of Mexico), the northern Caribbean and the Atlantic ocean converge.
President Trump is fond of noting that America’s security is enhanced by our having oceans between us and our greatest potential foes.
During the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, I was a teenager in a U.S. Navy family, living in military housing in Key West.
During the crisis, I walked to a familiar beach area within the base, where I found a U.S. Army mobile missile launcher pointed toward Cuba.
The current Administration has lofted ideas for annexing Canada and Greenland, but has not, insofar as I’ve heard, announced interest in annexing Cuba, which is said to be looking ahead to fresh discussions with Russia about strengthening ties beyond 2030.
President Trump’s dealings with Russian President Vladimir Putin may reflect the chief executives’ mutual adoption of the adage, “Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.”
There could be wisdom in that. Yet, we must pray that this Administration will be ready, should President Putin − perhaps hand-in-hand with Xi Xinping, China’s president and general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party − decide to establish fresh residency 90 miles from our border, thereby creating a gateway for economic hegemony in the Americas.
