NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a warning this week about Sloth fever, a deadly mosquito-borne virus that made its way to New York.
Sloth fever, also known as Oropouche virus, can lead to more serious conditions like encephalitis and meningitis. The director of Infection Prevention at Northwell Health, Hanna Newman, talks about the virus on PIX11 Morning News.
Oropouche virus is sometimes called sloth fever because scientists who first investigated it found it in a three-toed sloth, which they believed was important in spreading the virus between insects and animals.
Symptoms of sloth fever include:
sudden fever
severe headache
chills
muscle aches
joint pain
