This is the first multilateral diplomatic engagement by Mr. Lam in his new role. It is also the first time a Party General Secretary and State President of Vietnam will directly participate in high-level sessions of the UN General Assembly.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son said that over the past nearly 50 years, the fruitful relationship between Vietnam and the UN has constantly been deepened and and strengthened. Throughout the process of  post-war reconstruction and international integration, Vietnam has always had the companionship of and assistance from the UN, he noted. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the UN promptly supported Vietnam, especially with vaccines, helping the country defeat the virus and restore its economy quickly.

“Vietnam has become a reliable, active, and responsible partner of the international community and the UN. It has proactively and actively participated in and substantively and extensively contributed ideas and resources to key activities of the UN,” said Deputy PM Son.

After his trip to the US, Party leader and President To Lam will pay a State visit to Cuba at the invitation of the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee and President of Cuba Miguel Diaz Canel Bermudez.

Head of the Party Central Committee’s External Relations Commission, Le Hoai Trung, said that the visit demonstrates the willingness of the Party and State of Vietnam and the Party and State of Cuba to continue strengthening mutual understanding and coordination in international issues.

Both sides will discuss ways to enhance multi-faceted cooperation, including economic and trade collaboration, he added.
