In his address, Andersen underscored Curaçao International Airport’s record-breaking year and unveiled strategic plans to manage the anticipated surge in passenger traffic for the 2024/2025 winter season.
Andersen revealed that 2024 has been a historic year for the airport, with passenger numbers surpassing two million. The CEO emphasized that the airport’s role extends far beyond serving as a point of entry and exit, calling it an “economic growth engine for Curaçao.” The airport directly supports the island’s economy through job creation, providing nearly 1,800 jobs, and generating revenue from fees, taxes, and tourism-related activities, which contributed over 30% to the island’s GDP in 2024.
Expanding Air Services and Network
Looking ahead to the winter 2024/2025 season, Curaçao International Airport expects even more passengers as airlines increase flight frequencies and open new routes. Notably, Delta Airlines will introduce a daily flight between Atlanta and Curaçao, while Azul and Wingo will add new connections from Fort Lauderdale and Medellín, respectively. The airport now partners with 21 airlines, offering expanded connectivity across the Americas and Europe, including new routes to key destinations like São Paulo and Bogotá.
Addressing Capacity Challenges
To accommodate the growing demand, CAP is implementing several infrastructure improvements. Andersen acknowledged the capacity limitations at peak times, affecting both departures and arrivals. Measures are being taken to optimize the airport’s capacity, including dynamic counter allocations, enhanced queue management, and the development of new bus and curbside parking facilities. COO Michael Hoehenberger outlined additional investments in equipment and technology to ease congestion, including the introduction of express passes and new passenger boarding bridges, expected to be operational by mid-2025.
The future appears bright for Curaçao International Airport, with passenger growth expected to continue into 2025. CAP forecasts a 9-11% increase in traffic compared to 2024, driven by strong demand from Europe, North America, and Latin America. The company also plans to expand room inventory on the island by over 50%, boosting tourism infrastructure to meet rising demand.
