New archaeological discoveries about Curaçao’s first inhabitants should be included in the school curriculum

WILLEMSTAD – Parliament member Steven Croes attended the presentation of a recent in-depth study conducted by archaeologists affiliated with the National Archaeological-Anthropological Memory Management (NAAM). This research has revealed new insights about the indigenous population that once lived on the island. One of the key discoveries, contributed to by a local researcher, shows that the first inhabitants of Curaçao settled between 5600 and 5735 years ago—290 to 850 years earlier than previously thought.

These indigenous people arrived on the island from northern South America, utilizing more advanced navigation methods than earlier believed. This conclusion was drawn after the discovery of artifacts at Saliña Sint Marie, now recognized as the oldest archaeological site in Curaçao and one of the oldest in the Caribbean.

Steven Croes emphasized that these fascinating historical findings should play a larger role in the educational system. While children are already learning about Curaçao’s indigenous population, he believes the school curriculum should be updated to reflect this new information.

Croes also advocates for more opportunities for children and young people to engage with institutions like NAAM to stay informed about new discoveries and developments. He suggests that the general population would also benefit from these findings, enriching their knowledge of the island’s history.

He congratulated NAAM, the archaeologists, and all involved for their tireless efforts in uncovering more about Curaçao’s rich history and expressed his eagerness to learn more from future discoveries.
