WILLEMSTAD – Azul Airlines has doubled its flights between Curaçao and Belo Horizonte, Brazil, from two to four per week. Additionally, the airline has launched a new connection between Curaçao and Fort Lauderdale, Florida. According to Muryad de Bruin, head of the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), while Brazilian tourists are among the highest spenders, the island’s nightlife and entertainment offerings remain too European. “We can diversify to appeal more to North and South American tourists,” he stated.

Last week, Hato Airport celebrated the inaugural flight of Azul Airlines from Fort Lauderdale. De Bruin indicated that the increased number of flights from Azul Airlines is a permanent addition, not limited to the high season.

The growth in Brazilian tourism is largely attributed to consistent marketing efforts, including online campaigns, visits from Brazilian influencers and media, and visibility on physical billboards in Brazil. Notably, since Azul Airlines began its flights, other airlines like Avianca via Bogotá and Copa Airlines via Panama have also started transporting Brazilian travelers to Curaçao.

While Brazil is well-known for its warm weather and beautiful beaches, Curaçao offers a unique mix of tropical appeal with a European flair, making it an attractive destination for Brazilian vacationers. However, there are currently no plans for additional direct connections with other airlines or other cities in Brazil.

Diversifying the Nightlife

According to De Bruin, one area for improvement is Curaçao’s nightlife. At present, much of it caters to European tourists, with limited offerings for visitors from North and South America. Expanding nightlife options to better suit these demographics could make the island even more appealing to tourists from those regions.
