Parliamentarian Calmes calls for apology from Mercelina over controversy

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao parliamentarian Rennox Calmes has demanded an apology from his colleague, Gwendell Mercelina, following a controversial incident that, according to Calmes, has caused embarrassment for the entire parliament on the international stage.

Calmes, a member of the Trabou pa Kòrsou party, believes that Mercelina’s actions have put the Curaçao parliament in a negative light globally. He claims that Mercelina misrepresented the situation by stating that the regional parliament, Parlatino, had asked him to nominate himself for the position of chairman, a claim that Parlatino later denied. Calmes argues that Mercelina’s handling of the situation reflects poorly on the entire legislature.

“If my colleague does not apologize, I believe that Speaker of Parliament Charetti America-Francisca should step in and offer an apology on his behalf,” Calmes stated.

During a parliamentary meeting this week, Speaker America-Francisca made it clear that she would not apologize for Mercelina’s actions. However, she emphasized that she took responsibility by discussing Mercelina’s nomination in the parliament session. “Had I made such a mistake, I would have apologized long ago,” the Speaker stated, responding to the situation.

The controversy has sparked debates within the parliament, with calls for accountability and clarification of the facts regarding the nomination process.
