U.S. 'Doomsday Plane' makes stopover in Curaçao

WILLEMSTAD – A rare military aircraft, the E-4B Doomsday Plane, made a stopover at Curaçao’s Hato International Airport on Thursday. The aircraft, which serves as a flying command post in the event of a crisis, landed for safety reasons while en route to another destination. It remains unclear whether U.S. President Joe Biden was aboard, though he was in Peru for the APEC summit in Lima at the time.

The E-4B is a militarized version of the Boeing 747-200 and functions as an advanced command center capable of coordinating operations during extreme emergencies, including nuclear crises. The plane departed Curaçao Sunday afternoon for an undisclosed location. Its presence in the Caribbean is rare, making this stopover especially notable.

President Biden met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Lima on Sunday during the APEC summit. Their discussions, aimed at easing tensions between the two global powers, covered topics such as artificial intelligence, trade policies, Taiwan, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. Biden emphasized the importance of managing competition responsibly and called for increased cooperation.

The arrival of the E-4B in Curaçao highlights the strategic role the island plays in the logistics and security operations of the United States in the region. It also underscores the growing geopolitical dynamics in Latin America, where both the U.S. and China are vying for influence.
