Father Jay Cartwright has been appointed vicar for canonical affairs in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nassau.
The appointment came after the Catholic University of America conferred the Licentiate in Canon Law (J.C.L.) degree on Cartwright on Saturday, August 24.
In a memo to pastors and administrators on August 26 Archbishop Patrick Pinder said, “We warmly congratulate Fr. Jay on this stellar achievement. Now, as a fully qualified canon lawyer, Fr. Jay, in addition to his current duties, will assume the responsibility of Vicar for Canonical Affairs in our archdiocese. This responsibility was made vacant by the recent elevation of Bishop Kendrick J. Forbes.”
Cartwright, who was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 2018, is pastor at Holy Family at Robinson and Claridge Roads.
The office of Vicar for Canonical Affairs directly assists in conducting the legal governance of the Archdiocese of Nassau in accordance with church teaching.
The Vicar for Canonical Affairs provides advice on matters associated with various aspects of the church law and conducts the necessary relevant and applicable canonical research. The office aims to promote and protect the obligations, rights and privileges of the faithful throughout the archdiocese; provides assistance and consultation on all areas of church law. It also processes and regulates permissions, dispensations, rescripts and the alienation of temporal goods of the diocese.
Cartwright is the second priest to be appointed with a vicar title.
Fr. David N. Cooper, whose priestly ordination took place on June 22, 1995, was appointed vicar general after Forbes’ elevation.
According to Canon Law, a vicar general is the principal deputy of the bishop of a diocese for the exercise of administrative authority and possesses the title of local ordinary. The vicar general exercises the archbishop’s ordinary executive power over the entire diocese and is the highest official in a diocese or other particular church after the archbishop.
Prior to Forbes’ elevation to Holy See of the Diocese of Roseau, Dominica, he held the positions vicar, canon lawyer, and pastor.
Pope Francis appointed Forbes, bishop of the Diocese of Roseau, Dominica, on May 2.
Forbes was born in Nassau on August 20, 1975.
He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Nassau on June 11, 2002.
Forbes served as associate rector and then rector of St. Francis Xavier Cathedral from 2002 to 2006.
From 2006 to 2009, he was pastor of Holy Family Church. From 2009 to his appointment as bishop elect of the Diocese of Roseau, he was pastor of St. Paul the Apostle Church.
In 2011, he earned a JCL from The Catholic University of America.
From 2015 to his appointment as bishop elect of the Diocese of Roseau, Forbes held the position of vicar general of the Archdiocese of Nassau, succeeding the late Monsignor Preston A. Moss.
His responsibilities over the years have also included the Catholic Board of Education, Archdiocesan Judicial Vicar, Archdiocesan Review Board, Archdiocesan Presbyteral Council, Archdiocesan College of Consultors and Adjunct Judicial Vicar, Western Antilles Marriage Tribunal.
Forbes was the second Bahamian to be appointed bishop.
Archbishop of Nassau Patrick Pinder was appointed auxiliary bishop of Nassau on June 27, 2003; on August 15, 2003, was his Episcopal Ordination. He was appointed archbishop on February 17, 2004, and installed as Archbishop of Nassau on May 4, 2004 at St. Francis Cathedral.
