The 2024 Paris Olympics came to a close on Sunday, August 11, with the United States of America winning the final gold medal of the competition courtesy of their women’s basketball team.
That gold medal placed the USA atop the medal table with 40 gold medals, 44 silvers, and 42 bronzes for a total of 126 medals, the most of any team in this edition of the Olympics.
People’s Republic of China also finished with 40 golds but only had 27 silver and 24 bronze medals to slot in behind the US.
Japan came in third with 20 golds, 12 silvers, and 13 bronzes ahead of Australia (18-19-16) and host France (16-26-22).
The Philippines had its best-ever medal haul in the Olympics, finishing with two golds and two bronzes to finish in a tie with Hong Kong, China at 37th place.
