United will introduce the first service between the U.S. Northeast and the Caribbean island of Dominica.
The weekly flight, connecting Dominica with Newark, launches Feb. 15 and will operate seasonally on Saturdays through Aug. 16.
United will utilize a Boeing 737-700 for the service.
Currently, the lone route connecting Dominica to the U.S. mainland is flown daily out of Miami by American Airlines. In addition, regional carrier Silver Airways flies to Dominica daily from San Juan.
Dominica authorities are pushing to build a larger tourism market. Next year, Dominica is expecting several hotels to open, amounting to 500 hotel rooms, increasing the island’s room count by 25%, Discover Dominica said.
Also, Dominica recently extended the runway at Douglas-Charles Airport. A larger airport is under construction.
