Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) – The meeting on Tuesday, October 14 between Dominican President Danilo Medina and the Haitian President Michel Martelly took place at the right time and helped “prevent further hatred between the two countries”: said yesterday, 15 October, the Dominican Episcopal Conference. “What is essential, is learn to live with mutual respect, looking for an alternative that allows every nation to grow working for the poorest who are here and there, without outside interference”, wrote the Bishops in the editorial of the newspaper “Camino”, organ of information of the Dominican Catholic Church.
The text reads: “Agreements have to be signed and respected, and that wisdom prevails between the authorities of the country and those of the neighboring country, and that no particular interest is above the legitimate aspiration of the people in each country who want to lead a dignified life”.
The text points out that the meeting between Martelly and Medina coincided with a meeting of the Bishops of the border dioceses of Fort Liberté, Hinché and Jacmel (Haiti) and Barahona, San Juan de la Maguana and Mao-Montecristi (Dominican Republic ). The note sent to Fides reports that “it is normal that the Pastors of the Church meet to plan actions and to find solutions to situations of tension between communities and between peoples”.
