As tourist numbers in Central America surpass pre-pandemic levels, countries throughout the region are racing to bolster their airport infrastructure.
From Belize to Nicaragua, nations are unveiling new airports, expanding existing facilities, and investing in modernizations to accommodate the growing influx of international visitors.
Belize is leading the charge with a $250 million modernization of Philip Goldson International Airport. The project includes new terminals, taxiways, and retail spaces.
Guatemala, too, is enhancing La Aurora International Airport through a public-private partnership to accommodate more flights.
El Salvador’s “El Salvador Vuela” program allocated $320 million for airport infrastructure, including the construction of the Pacific Airport and upgrades to Ilopango Airport.
Honduras is also making significant strides, with the remodeling of Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport in San Pedro Sula and the expansion of Roatán’s Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport.
Nicaragua is building Punta Huete International Airport, a $400 million project expected to serve over three million passengers annually.
Meanwhile, Panama’s Tocumen Airport is undergoing runway upgrades, and the Enrique A. Jiménez Airport in Colón is expanding its logistics and passenger services.
In the Dominican Republic, a new terminal is being constructed at Las Américas International Airport, while Cabo Rojo Airport is under development to support the growing tourism sector.
With its 29 international airports, Central America has witnessed a remarkable surge in tourism in recent months. The region’s airports are now handling over 31 million air passengers annually, a testament to the growing popularity of its destinations among international travelers.
El Salvador has experienced a significant increase in foreign visitors, largely attributed to a dramatic decline in homicides following a crackdown on gangs.
The Dominican Republic also set a new record for tourist arrivals in 2023, welcoming over 10 million visitors. Of these, over 8 million arrived by air, surpassing previous records.
