Members of Hazleton’s Dominican community celebrated the 181st anniversary of the Dominican Republic’s independence on Thursday.
La casa Dominicana de Hazleton (the Dominican House) on Broad Street in Hazleton hosted a celebration of independence with flags, pins, food and more.
Dominican Independence Day is celebrated every Feb. 27 to mark the country’s freedom from the Haitian regime in 1844.
A group — “La Trinitaria” was founded by Juan Pablo Duarte, Ramon Matias Mella and Francisco del Rosario Sanchez. On Feb. 27, a group of roughly 100 men seized Puerta del Conde, forcing the Haitian army out of Santo Domingo. A cannon shot was fired and the blue, red and white flag of the Dominican Republic was raised.
