Dominican Republic Plans to Deport Up to 10,000 Haitian Migrants Every Week

The Caribbean nation of the Dominican Republic has unveiled its plan to deport up to 10,000 undocumented migrants every week to its conflict-ridden neighbour, Haiti. The country says it has noticed Haitian migrants in “excess”, who are living in the nation illegally. The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader said the violence and instability in Haiti is a national security risk. The United Nations has urged countries, including the Dominican Republic and the United States, not to deport Haitian migrants. The Dominican Republic last year accounted for 90 percent of the Haitian migrants’ deportation from around the globe. It has also closed border crossings with Haiti.
