-Minister Raful says police reform initiatives and actions against crime yield positive results against organized crime.
The Minister of Interior and Police, Faride Raful, stressed this Friday that the results of the annual “InsightCrime” study, which placed the Dominican Republic with the lowest homicide rate in the Caribbean and one of the lowest in Latin America in 2024, reflect the actions adopted in the Joint Task Force to guarantee citizen security and transform the institution of order.
Minister Raful refers to the study by Insigthcrime, a regional institution in Citizen Security. The study measured all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean and reported a 16.4% reduction in their homicide rates during 2024.
This reality, says Minister Raful, highlights the progress of citizen security and police reform initiatives in addition to the fight against organized crime. The homicide rate is used as the leading indicator worldwide to measure violence in a society.
“Citizen Security is multifactorial and multisectoral. Working through all the variables is a constant challenge. This is a commitment of all. We have to guarantee order and coexistence, we continue working. Thank you, president, for your vision and support in building a safer country,” Raful said in a post on his “X” account (Twitter).
At the same time, he said that all theft indicators were reduced. For example, robberies and car thefts, which are associated with more significant crimes, were decreased by about 20%.
The minister indicated that these data can be consulted in the reports called Statistical Analysis of Crime (available to everyone on the PN portal) and as of March, in the official bulletin of CADSECI, an observatory in which she said that work is being done to provide the country with a purified record that allows better decisions to be made.
“As President Luis Abinader expressed in his accountability, from the Ministry of Interior and Police we remain committed to confronting violence and criminality in all its aspects, with the support of citizens and the commitment of our law enforcement agencies,” Raful concluded.
