On the occasion of the 18th anniversary of Law 491-06 on Civil Aviation, the president of the Civil Aviation Board (JAC), Héctor Porcella, highlighted the progress and development of the country’s air connectivity.

Porcella pointed out as “historic” the strengthening that national civil aviation will experience with the entry into force of the open skies agreement with the United States and the recent air transport agreements signed with Argentina and Jamaica. “In 2025, the skies of the Dominican Republic once again showed intense activity, a key factor for the country’s economic development.”

He explained that from January 2024 to date, 122,252 commercial passenger flights were carried out. Similarly, he stressed that “this year it is projected to close with approximately 133 thousand commercial passenger flights, which would represent a record for the country.”

He stressed that this year a total of six Dominican airlines transported 1,042,820 passengers on international commercial flights. “Dominican airlines are at their best, with surprising exponential growth.” He indicated that the Dominican Republic’s commercial aviation policy, the shared vision of the sector, the commitment to government goals and the strategic role that shows the growth and consolidation of air transport, drawing the attention of an organization of global reach such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

“The DR’s international air connectivity is a telling aspect of its progress. Every year the country has established new routes and increases flight frequencies. The interest of travellers in visiting our territory is increasing”. He added that the main destinations operated by Dominican airlines continue to be to and from Latin America. Here Mexico and Colombia stood out, representing approximately 50% of its volume of passengers transported and the establishment of 96 new routes,” said Porcella.

He indicated that air connectivity has been strengthened, with the approval of new trade cooperation agreements “the Dominican Republic is a world reference in civil aviation, thanks to the leadership and commitment assumed by the Dominican Government that have made air transport a national priority.”

During the last plenary meeting this year, Porcella presented a detailed summary of the progress of the sector, the performance of the agency and the future plans of the Civil Aviation Board to continue working so that the country is part of a global air transport network that contributes to the economic development of the country.
