Pável Isa Contreras resigns as Minister of Economy 

Santo Domingo.- Pável Isa Contreras has officially resigned from his position as Minister of Economy, Planning, and Development (MEPyD) in the Dominican Republic. The resignation, submitted to President Luis Abinader on December 4, was confirmed by the ministry’s communications department on Thursday. Isa Contreras will step down effective January 10, 2025.

In a statement, the ministry highlighted that the resignation was part of an ongoing process previously discussed with President Abinader. The economist expressed gratitude for the opportunity to lead efforts to promote sustainable and resilient development policies, productive transformation, and equity.

In his resignation letter, Isa Contreras cited the successful establishment of a new macrostructure for a combined Ministry of Economy and Finance as a key milestone of his tenure. Appointed in 2022, Isa Contreras spearheaded initiatives to align public planning and investment with a long-term vision for national growth.

A distinguished career

Pável Ernesto Isa Contreras holds a degree in Economics from INTEC (1988), a Master’s in Economic Policy from Costa Rica’s National University (1994), and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst (2003).

His career spans decades of research, advisory roles, and academic contributions. He has worked as an investigator at the CIECA think tank in the Dominican Republic, director of research for CRIES, and as an economic advisor for the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Economy.

Isa Contreras also held leadership roles with international organizations, serving as an officer for the United Nations World Food Program and as coordinator for the United Nations Development Program’s Office of Human Development in the Dominican Republic.

As an academic, he has published extensively on international trade, social policy, rural development, and human development. He has taught at universities in the Dominican Republic, Central America and the United States.

This resignation marks the end of a significant chapter in Isa Contreras’ public service career, as the Dominican Republic prepares for the transition to a newly integrated ministry under President Abinader’s administration.
