Raleigh-Durham International Airport and Avelo Airlines announced the addition of two new international flights on Wednesday.
As temperatures dipped into the 20s on Wednesday morning, the growth at RDU got a warm welcome from stakeholders in expanding routes to tropical destinations.
Flights to Montego Bay, Jamaica (Feb. 12) and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic (Feb. 22) will begin in February through Avelo.
An Avelo spokesperson said the flights will be twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and utilize the Boeing 737 aircrafts. The prices are $129 each for one way flights, not including fees and taxes.
“You couldn’t pick a better day as cold as it is outside to announce a tropical destination,” said Michael Landguth, president of Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority. “We continue to grow in this market. And of course, international travel is a major driver of growth, where we’ve seen a 30 percent increase in traffic since April alone for international customers.”
