Quito (Agenzia Fides) – The Bishops’ Conference of Ecuador (CEE) announced the conclusion, yesterday afternoon, July 18, of dialogue table number 2, called “Public and private bank”. “These have been four days marked by intense listening, a high technical level and a clear desire to find solutions that benefit the entire country” affirms the statement from the General Secretariat of the CEE sent to Agenzia Fides. Representatives of the largest organizations in the sector and of the three associations of indigenous communities have participated and will communicate to the country the fruit of these joint work sessions. The Episcopal Conference, quoting Pope Francis on the importance of the debate in which everyone has the right to intervene in order to avoid closing in on their particular interests (see Fratelli Tutti, 203), thanks all those who have brought “their experience, their professionalism, their testimony, their responsibility and their humanity” so that this dialogue process will yield good results, especially for those who most need everyone’s solidarity. “Certainly the work continues”, the statement concludes, expressing the hope that, when issues on which we disagree are discussed, we can support each other in this joint work.
On July 13, the first two dialogue tables between the national government and the three major indigenous organizations took place at the headquarters of the Episcopal Conference: Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie), Confederación Nacional de Organizaciones Campesinas, Indígenas y Negras ( Fenocin), Consejo de Pueblos y Organizaciones Indígenas Evangélicos del Ecuador (Feine). These dialogue tables, with the participation of delegates from the different parties, were responsible for analyzing the following issues: the targeting of fuel subsidies and credits with public and private banks. The EEC, as guarantor of this process, which was reached after a period of strikes, protests and anti-government demonstrations that resulted in violence, with deaths and injuries (see Fides, 22/6/2022; 24/6/2022; 1/7/2022; 6/7/2022), has made its infrastructures available and coordinated the logistics necessary for a successful outcome of this journey of listening, reflection and decision making.
