Danish aquafeed maker BioMar announced that its Ecuadorian shrimp feed production facility has been certified by the Aquaculture Stewardship Council’s (ASC) feed standard.
The certification, which was first introduced by ASC in 2024, was awarded to BioMar’s facility in the shrimp production hub of Guayaquil.
“With this certification, our customers can be confident that they are using feed that meets the highest global standards for sustainability,” said Henrik Aarestrup, BioMar vice president for Latin America.
BioMar’s Guayaquil facility was audited by an independent body to ensure compliance with ASC’s requirements for responsible feed ingredient sourcing, facility management and environmental protection.
The announcement comes as the ASC aims to transform global aquaculture feed production by requiring ASC-certified farms to use ASC-compliant feed by October 2025. BioMar is one of over 30 feed mills working towards certification.
“There is still much more progress to be made, but with the commitment of the seafood farming sector and the entire value chain, we now have over 30 feed mills either certified or in assessment. That collaborative effort will truly transform global aquatic feed production towards greater responsibility,” said ASC CEO Chris Ninnes.
BioMar’s certification will allow the country’s farmers to more easily access ASC-compliant feed necessary to achieve or maintain ASC farm certifications, said BioMar. “Our goal is to provide shrimp farmers with the tools they need to succeed in a rapidly evolving industry,” said Aarestrup.
