Nine of the 10 people killed in a mass shooting at the weekend in southwest Ecuador were citizens of neighboring Colombia, the Colombian government said Tuesday.
The massacre occurred early Sunday morning in El Oro province.
Ecuadoran police said that the victims were found inside a house and on a nearby road.
One dismembered body was found in a bag.
The incident was the latest in a spate of recent bloodshed, much of it linked to drug gang warfare, in a country once seen as a beacon of stability in South America.
The Ecuadoran police said that the victims had arrived in the country a few days before the shootings and had rented a rural property.
El Oro is one of six provinces in the Andean country that are under a state of emergency due to rising violence caused by criminal gangs.
President Daniel Noboa in January declared war on organized crime and deployed the army to combat the gangs on the streets and in prisons.
Colombian armed groups with drug-trafficking activities, including dissidents from the defunct left-wing FARC rebel group, operate along the border with Ecuador.
