Interest in how to move out of the U.S. has been growing in recent years—but following the results of the 2024 U.S. presidential election, it has reached a fever pitch. With news that Donald Trump is returning to the White House, searches for terms like “the best countries for Americans to move to,” “leaving America,” “where to move out of the US,” “moving abroad” and “where to move abroad” have spiked dramatically. According to Google Trends, queries for “how to move to Canada” increased by 400% by 8 p.m. on election night.
Marco Permunian, a founder of Italian Real Estate Lawyers and Italian Citizenship Assistance, an Italy-based agency with offices in New York, Houston, Memphis and Los Angeles that specializes in Italian citizenship law and immigration matters—says he has been inundated with requests. “As of today—the day following the election—since Trump’s victory was announced we have been receiving an inquiry every three minutes,” Permunian told me in an interview.
But it’s not just political tensions driving this interest. Many Americans are seeking a better quality of life, more affordable living costs and opportunities to embrace new cultures. Daniella Florez, who is moving to Albania from New York City, is among those making the leap—and while she says the election helped solidify her decision, it goes beyond that. “While there are many wonderful aspects of the United States, the quality of life I seek are personally not attainable for me here,” Florez told me in an interview. Florez worked with She Hit Refresh, a company that helps women 30+ move abroad. “I decided to move abroad during my one-year career sabbatical traveling the world solo in 2023, and this presidential election has further solidified my ambitions.”
Michelle Garabito is a digital nomad and cofounder of The Lux Nomads—and she has built a large community by helping Americans make the move. She is currently nomadic, living around Europe (currently in Turkey) and sharing her experiences on Instagram. “Moving abroad has truly been about healing myself, finding a better quality of life and embracing incredible cultures,” she told me in an interview. “And I also feel much safer here without the constant worry of mass shootings.”
But moving abroad isn’t always simple. Alex Ingrim, a Florence, Italy-based financial advisor with Chase Buchanan USA, advises Americans on the financial and logistical complexities of relocating. “Moving for political reasons rarely leads to a sustainable move,” Ingrim told me in an interview. “It’s important to consider all the small things that can add up to significant complications in a move—are you legally allowed to live in the foreign country? Are you planning on becoming tax resident? Is the cost of living affordable? Could you qualify for a mortgage? All the things we take for granted in the U.S. can be harder to re-create in a foreign country. This can sometimes take several months of pre-planning.”
But still, the dream is there—and if you want to make it a reality, here’s a look at some of the best destinations for Americans to relocate abroad, as well as experts who can help you make the move.

Spain
With its blend of affordability, culture and a top-notch healthcare system, Spain is a hotspot for digital nomads and retirees. Popular areas for expats include Malaga (which has been named a top city for expats to live), Madrid, the beaches of the Costa Blanca and scenic towns like Marbella and Denia. Through The Lux Nomads, Garabito guides expats through the Digital Nomad Visa process, connecting them with top immigration and tax professionals. “Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa offers tremendous flexibility, allowing nomads to travel freely throughout the Schengen zone,” says Garabito. “This gives them the chance to explore other European countries, enjoy an incredible work-life balance, immerse in diverse cultures, and savor nourishing, wholesome foods.”
Zee James and Brett Schneider, an American couple, followed Garabito on social media for months before reaching for help making the move. “We submitted our digital nomad visa application on July 16, and by August 14, we were approved,” James told me in an interview. “Now, we’re living in beautiful Valencia, with visas valid until July 2027. The process was smoother than we ever imagined.”

Albania
Albania is quickly becoming a hotspot for American expats, thanks to its welcoming policies, low cost of living, low cost of living and beautiful untouched nature. “U.S. citizens can live there visa-free for a year,” says Cepee Tabibian, founder of She Hit Refresh and author of the book I’m Outta Here! An American’s Ultimate Visa Guide to Living in Europe. “The Albanian government and people are very welcoming to Americans, and it’s one of the safest and most affordable places in Europe.”
Cheryl Orlov, a She Hit Refresh client who moved from California to Tirana in September 2023 says she always wanted to explore Europe. “Albania has been a dream. The topography and climate remind me of California, but with a much lower cost of living and a strong sense of community,” Orlov told me in an interview.

Italy
Italy has long drawn Americans, and the interest is only growing. “Italy is a great place to live because of the ease of public transportation here—it is very well-connected by trains—and affordable public healthcare, along with advertising a wealth of art and beauty, from our coastlines to our architectural masterpieces,” says Permunian of Italian Real Estate Lawyers. “It’s a place where you can relax and enjoy life but also go out and explore cities with centuries of history.” Permunian says he has seen a spike in inquiries from Americans, especially those seeking Italian citizenship or investing in property. Many are purchasing homes not just for personal use but also to rent out, often using platforms like Airbnb to help finance their new lifestyle. (One client told Permunian that once they have their Italian citizenship, they plan to purchase a property in Italy where they will live for the next four years.)
Italy is also embracing remote workers with its new digital nomad visa, which is valid for one year and open to professionals who are established as remote workers. Unlike some similar programs, you don’t have to be self-employed to qualify; remote employees are eligible too. Permunian stresses the importance of thorough preparation, as navigating the complexities of Italy’s tax system and bureaucracy can be daunting. Still, for those willing to plan carefully, Italy offers an unparalleled lifestyle.

France
“For many Americans, the idea of life in France represents a chance to slow down, enjoy the small pleasures of everyday life and be part of a vibrant cultural scene,” Boston Alexandra Englehart Vicario, CEO and cofounder of Finding La Dolce Vita—an expat relocation service specializing in moves to France, Monaco and Italy—told me in an interview. “The healthcare system here is particularly appealing—it provides comprehensive coverage and is one of the most affordable in Europe.”
Families are also drawn to France for its excellent education system and safe, close-knit communities. According to Vicario, one client of Finding La Dolce Vita—a young family—relocated to the charming town of Uzès and found that their children thrived in an environment that prioritized holistic development and a balanced lifestyle. “France’s focus on education, community, and leisure creates a family-friendly environment that many expats find both comforting and enriching,” says Vicario.

Beyond its beautiful landscapes and sunny weather, Portugal captivates Americans with its laid-back lifestyle, relatively affordable cost of living, welcoming expat communities and high-quality healthcare system. The allure of Portugal has even caught the attention of high-profile figures like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, who are reportedly planning a move there.
The country offers a variety of visa options, including the popular Golden Visa for investors and the D7 Visa, which is designed for retirees and remote workers with passive income. While Portugal has many advantages, it’s important for expats to plan ahead and understand the country’s tax policies to make the most of their new lifestyle. Popular locations include Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve with its picturesque beaches and year-round mild climate.

Monaco
Monaco is a top spot for high-net-worth individuals, offering a tax-free environment, unmatched safety and a luxurious Mediterranean lifestyle, according to Vicario of Finding La Dolce Vita. “Monaco is the perfect blend of financial benefits and an extraordinary quality of life,” says Vicario. “The principality is known for its world-class infrastructure, high-quality healthcare and exceptional safety, which makes it a top choice for families and individuals seeking both luxury and peace of mind.”
But the appeal extends beyond financial incentives. According to Vicario, one client from Georgia chose Monaco not just for its tax advantages but for the unparalleled lifestyle. “Monaco offers access to premier schools, healthcare and exclusive amenities along the French Riviera,” she says. “It’s a place where families can feel secure while enjoying the best that Europe has to offer, from fine dining to cultural events.”

Costa Rica
Costa Rica is a top choice for Americans looking to escape the noise of election season and enjoy all the perks that make it an expat favorite—favorable tax policies, no tax on foreign-earned income and a highly regarded, affordable healthcare system. International Living named Costa Rica the world’s top retirement destination for 2024. “It remains a place where good-value living is easy,” says Jennifer Stevens, executive editor of International Living. Moving here is surprisingly straightforward: Costa Rica has established residency programs that simplify the process, whether you’re retired or working remotely. Recent incentives, such as simplified residency options and tax exemptions on imported goods, add to the appeal, along with property taxes as low as 0.25% and investment visas available for those purchasing real estate worth $150,000 or more.
Places like W Residences Costa Rica—which offers a sustainable, high-end living experience at the luxurious Reserva Conchal Sustainable Community Resort—make relocation effortless. “At Reserva Conchal, about 60% of the families who have chosen to make this home are from the U.S.,” says Scott Cooke, a spokesperson for the resort. “They’re drawn by the country’s vibrant lifestyle, strong sense of community and focus on sustainability. It’s easy to see why Costa Rica continues to be a top choice for families seeking both adventure and tranquility.”

With recent incentives simplifying the residency process, Panama attracts retirees, remote workers, and investors alike.
One of Panama’s biggest draws is the ability to experience diverse lifestyles within a compact country. You can transition from the cosmopolitan energy of Panama City—with its mix of modern skyscrapers and historic colonial charm—to the serene beaches of Coronado or the lush highlands of Boquete, known for its cooler climate. “Because it’s a relatively small country, you can easily go from beachside relaxation to big-city conveniences,” says Stevens from International Living.
