Nayib Bukele won the presidential elections in El Salvador this Sunday by achieving more than 53% of the votes, with 87.6% of the total having been counted.
Bukele, candidate of the right-wing Grand Alliance for National Unity (GANA), reached 1.254.207 votes (53,78%), followed by the candidate of the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena), Carlos Calleja, with 737.412 votes (31,62%). ), and the candidate of the government Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN), Hugo Martínez, who came in third place with 321.274 votes (13,77%).
In this way, Bukele, just 37 years old, becomes the first president in the last 30 years who is not part of one of the two most traditional parties in the country.
Bukele will also become the second president of El Salvador to be of Palestinian origin, after Tony Saca, who governed between 2004 and 2009.
Bukele’s paternal grandparents were born in Jerusalem and Bethlehem and moved to Central America during his childhood. Both were Christians, although their son Armando, the new president’s father, converted to Islam and was Imam and one of the leaders of the small Muslim community in the country.
Nayib Bukele, the new president of El Salvador, visited Israel in 2018 after being invited by the Israeli Foreign Ministry to participate in the International Congress of Mayors. The then mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, even gave special recognition to Bukele.
