Bukele to visit Argentina this month to meet with Milei

President of El Salvador, Nayib Bukele

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele will visit Argentina in late September to meet with his counterpart Javier Milei, government sources have confirmed.

Bukele “is going” to Buenos Aires, the source said, without providing any additional details.

In February, both heads of state attended CPAC, the biggest conservative convention in the United States, where former US president Donald Trump – the Republican candidate for the White House in the November election.

Both received a standing ovation for their speeches.

Milei visited San Salvador on June 1, on his return from a tour of the United States, to attend Bukele’s inauguration. The El Salvador leader, who has been criticised for human rights abuses during his crackdown on drug gangs, was re-elected in February.

Both presidents held a private meeting then.

Argentina’s Security Minister Patricia Bullrich visited San Salvador shortly thereafter, where she signed an agreement with her counterpart in the Central American country, Gustavo Villatoro, to “strengthen” the war on organised crime.

Bullrich was welcomed by Bukele and visited one of his “mega prisons,” where over 14,500 gang members are imprisoned as part of the “war” waged by the Salvadoran government against those gangs.

The Legislative Assembly granted permission to Bukele in July to leave the country to visit Argentina and other nations.
