Each year, on Sept. 15, Central America celebrates its independence. This holiday pays homage to the events of Sept. 15, 1821, when El Salvador, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica signed the Act of Independence of Central America, declaring themselves independent countries from the Spanish Crown.
These countries commemorate the day with different traditional activities, including the journey of the “Central American Torch of Liberty.” The journey of the torch begins in Guatemala and ends in Costa Rica.
However, these celebrations are not only held in those countries. In the United States, people from or descended from Central American families also honor the occasion.
The most important celebrations are held in California, specifically in Los Angeles. Here are the details of the 2024 Central American Independence Festival and Parade.
