Spanish law firm ECIJA has opened shop in Peru, building on a series of alliances it has formed across Latin America.
The integration of Berninzon & Benavides in Lima brings four partners and 32 others to a Latin America practice that now covers 15 countries and Puerto Rico. Berninzon & Benavides will rebrand as ECIJA, according to an ECIJA spokesperson.
“Latin America remains a pivotal focus for us and ECIJA is thrilled to welcome the talented partners and professionals of Berninzon & Benavides to our organisation,” said Alejandro Touriño, managing partner of ECIJA.
ECIJA derives about one-third of its revenue from Latin America. The Spanish firm also has a presence in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.
“This integration is a very important step that will allow us to expand our portfolio of services and respond to our clients’ growing demands for more sophisticated services and an international presence,” Eduardo Benavides, managing partner of ECIJA Peru, said.
Benavides added that his firm and ECIJA share a common business vision, commitment to excellent client service, and devotion to values such as diversity and sustainability.
The partners at Berninzon & Benavides Abogados have been recognised for their work in corporate law, M&A, construction, arbitration, dispute resolution and commercial litigation.
Firms across Latin America are experiencing a generational shift in leadership, opening the way for more partnerships. At the same time, many firm leaders see the need to plug into the international networks of global law firms to handle more cross-border work.
ECIJA’s Growth
ECIJA expects to end 2024 with more than €100 million ($109 million) in global revenue, with one-third of it coming from Latin America.
ECIJA’s 2024 revenue projection is up by about 10% from €91.8 in the 2023 fiscal year and an increase of about 20% over its 2022 revenue. The Spanish firm is on a mission to reach €150 million in revenue by 2028, boosted by a recent injection of private equity into the firm’s capital.
Over the summer, ECIJA announced that Spanish private equity firm Alia Capital Partners invested in a minority share of the firm. Details on the amount invested and percentage of ownership were confidential. The majority ownership of ECIJA, and management, remained in the hands of its professional partners.
The inclusion of Alia Capital Partners aims to boost the growth of ECIJA Tech—a division of lawyers and engineers focused on the digitalisation of legal departments for large corporations like Spanish energy giants Repsol and Iberdrola—as well as to attract new partners and open additional offices. The rapidly growing firm has already expanded its workforce by more than 20% over the past three years.
With the integration of Berninzon & Benavides in Peru, the Spanish firm’s global practice now boasts 220 partners and more than 1,200 professionals.
It also benefits from a non-exclusive strategic alliance with U.K.-based Taylor Wessing, established in March of 2023. The firms have since brought on clients such as German airline Lufthansa, audio player Spotify and retailer Amazon through the alliance.
The first ECIJA office was founded in Madrid in 1997, and specialized in audiovisual and intellectual property law. ECIJA’s core practice area today is technology, media and telecommunications, which brought in 35% of its 2023 revenue.
