Exploring South America as a Solo Female Traveler – Georgia Voice – Gay & LGBT Atlanta News

South America is a beautiful continent rich with vastly distinct cultures and traditions spanning over 14 countries. Due to its stunning coastlines, ancient history, delicious food, and much more, it has become a very popular tourist destination–especially for solo female travelers.

“More and more women are taking the leap to set off solo on their own backpacking expeditions across the South American continent,” say travel experts from Adventure Life. “While this is a welcome step toward empowerment, women heading off on these brave adventures should first be prepared”. They share their expertise on how to successfully explore South America as a female solo traveler.

Safety First

Although it’s generally considered to have a ‘machismo’ culture, you may be surprised to find out that South America is very safe for women travelers. “With that being said, as a woman traveler, be ready for male attention in the form of flattery and asking you to dance – a lot,” advises Adventure Life.

As with most places, just be sure to avoid isolated areas and stay in reputable accommodations. Vetted hostels are a great way to save a buck or two while making new friends along the way.

Another thing to be cautious of is your belongings. Make sure to keep tabs on your things by keeping them with you at all times, as petty thieves tend to hang around bus stations and busy markets.

Using your Resources

To make the most out of your trip, Adventure Life suggests taking the time to research and plan out your trip.

“Plan ahead and see what local festivals or activities will be offered in the destinations you choose to visit. If you do not want to do all the work yourself, book a group tour or utilize travel apps to help with navigation and planning.”

Acclimating to The South American Lifestyle

Learning a few phrases in the local language goes a long way while traveling in South America. People are often more open to receiving you when you take the time to research and respect their cultural norms.

Along with learning the language, blend in with local cultures by dressing the part. People in South America tend to dress smartly–that is, no shorts, flip flops, or athleisure. With that being said, you should also leave brand-name clothing, expensive jewelry, and electronics at home in order to avoid drawing unwanted attention to yourself from robbers.

Adventure Life says that “whether you are planning to hike to the breath-taking Machu Picchu, or relax on the stunning beaches of Cartagena, putting your safety first, using your resources, and blending into the cultural norms of the area are a great way to enhance your epic travels ahead.”
