The FIM is delighted to announce the return of FIM Land Speed World Records racing on the breathtaking Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia, South America. The Speed Trials Bolivia 2024 will be an FIM/FIA co-sanctioned event for both motorcycles and cars, and is scheduled to take place on the Salar de Uyuni in Bolivia from 18 October to 23 October.
The environment of Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni is nestled in the Altiplano region of the Andes Mountains, the world’s largest salt flat sits at a striking altitude of 3,600m (12,000 feet) above sea level. Now taking place in October (springtime in the southern hemisphere), the 2024 event will see warmer conditions than previous events, though the thin air and low temperatures still promise to take your breath. At over 10,000 square kilometers (nearly 4,000 square miles), the Salar can easily accommodate the 19-mile Speed Trials Bolivia 2024 track—an ideal setting for higher speed competitors seeking the largest track that FIM Land Speed World Records has to offer.
Speed Trials Bolivia 2024 is made possible through the support of Federacion Boliviana de Motociclismo (FBM), and its President, Aurelio Cruz Mendoza. Mike Akatiff, a three-time competitor in Bolivia, and owner of the TOP 1 Oil Ack Attack team, will serve as event organizer. The event is open to all automobile and motorcycle entries.
“Making this return to Bolivia is a leap of faith for us, no doubt,” says event organizer Mike Akatiff. “Racing in Bolivia has been a learning curve for us, but what keeps us coming back is the simple fact that the Salar de Uyuni is a unique stage for our world record attempt. Nowhere else on earth has a track like this, and we’re eager to return for a new attempt.”
The 2023 event saw two all-new records, the most notable going to Mike Garcia of the Garcia/Sims racing team on the final day of competition. After struggling to break the 250-mph-barrier for over 10 years, Garcia set a scorching speed of 265 mph (427 km/h) on his partially streamlined 1350cc turbo-charged Hayabusa motorcycle to claim a record that stood for nearly 12 years. Previous records set on the Bolivian Salar belong to 2024 event sponsor Al Lamb, who was the first-ever to set an FIM Land Speed World Record in Bolivia.
“The remoteness of the Salar comes with its challenges that we are well aware of, and we are also aware of what needs to be fixed moving forward,” says Akatiff. “Speed Trials Bolivia 2024 comes at a different time of year, under management that is better equipped handle local logistics for our race teams. With a truly professional world-class event, we can all focus on our goals of going fast and breaking world records.”
