Rescue Spa’s first-floor boutique and check-in desk lead the way to a Beaux Arts inspired staircase … [+] and second-storey treatment rooms featuring founder Danuta’s signature facials.

Walk six historic city blocks toward Rittenhouse Square from the towering Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia, and discover the city’s first luxury-wellness corridor. Making up this new mix of only-in-Philly feel-good destinations are the city’s first Equinox Fitness, a new outpost of the celeb-beloved Rescue spa, the city’s first Vuori shop and plenty of locally sourced and plant-forward fine dining.

The ritzy Rittenhouse neighborhood, founded in the 17th century and home to some of the city’s most expensive real estate, thankfully hasn’t seen its centuries-old facades change much from the outside, but inside over-the-top renovations and amenities abound, making the area a very exciting destination for luxury-preferring health nuts in 2024. Here are four of the most decadent wellness experiences in and around Rittenhouse, for everything from a customized spa dayl to a sweat-date and everything in between.

A Supermodel-Favorite Facial

Facials at Rescue Spa feature a range of product lines, including Mieloch’s own Danucera.

The skincare-curious might recognize Rescue Spa from its ecommerce counterpart shoprescuespa.com, a go-to source for hard-to-find Biologique Recherche products. Skincare diehards, on the other hand, are more likely to also be familiar with Rescue Spa’s founder Danuta Mieloch, whose expert-esthetician hands have treated A-list faces from Amber Valetta to Mark Ruffalo.

In December, 2022, Rescue Spa’s Philadelphia outpost relocated to a historic, 9,700 square foot Beaux Arts space in Rittenhouse Square with 15 treatment rooms, a nail lounge, hair salon, brow room and relaxation room. A ground-floor boutique features luxury-lifestyle gifts and skincare treasures, often carried as city exclusives, as well as a new, proprietary skincare line called Danucera.

Nearly unrecognizable from its former incarnation as Rittenhouse’s Barney’s New York after an $11m renovation by designer Michal Pulaczewski, details such as an intricate black metal staircase and a custom lighting centerpiece by lighting designer Lindsey Adelman make Rescue Spa an entirely new type of skincare destination for Philadelphia. A team of Danuta-trained estheticians offer a range of personalized skincare services including a signature Bio-Lift Facial.

An Impossibly High Tub, A Tent and Poolside Pilates

After a day of urban trekking between museums (The Franklin Institute is within easy walking … [+] distance), unwind with a soak in North America’s tallest hotel soaking tubs.

Opened in 2019, the 219-room Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center features 39 suites, all of which contain a soaking tub with jaw-dropping views of the city far below. The highest situated hotel in all of North America, its guest rooms and suites are located on the top 12 floors of Comcast’s 60-storey tower. Bath products by Rossano Ferretti and 24/7 room service that accommodate nearly any dietary restriction make it quite the luxurious sky-high retreat. Spa services are offered at The Spa, located on the 57th-floor overlooking much of the city and the Schuylkill River, with 700 pounds of crystals embedded into the walls.

Grownups aren’t the only ones able to indulge in mindful spaces high above the city. A kid’s tent is … [+] available upon request before or during any stay for young guests to have space all their own.

Amenities aren’t reserved for grownups. Children as young as 18 months can receive an in-room kids’ tent upon request, designed by the rooms team either in advance or during a stay. Parents and babies, meanwhile, can benefit from a new partnership with Baby Brezza that allows parents to select a range of infant feeding amenities from a menu, at no cost to guests.

Regularly scheduled poolside Pilates is available at different times throughout the year, taught by local teachers and hosted in partnership with Alo yoga.

When venturing beyond hotel walls, Four Seasons Philadelphia’s house car can whisk guests to any destination within 1.5 miles (Rescue Spa is just 0.6 miles away). And yes, they do have a carseat onsite or can install one upon request.

A New Age For Sweat

The Sporting Club at Bellevue, recently renovated, is Philadelphia’s 93,000 square foot destination … [+] for fitness and healthy living.

While many are awaiting the city’s first Equinox, featuring a 75-food saltwater pool and a lounge with a large cold and hot plunge area, upon opening in early 2025, The Sporting Club at The Bellevue is Philadelphia’s homegrown fitness destination. The 100,000 square foot gym space originally opened in 1989, and after a years-long pandemic closure and renovation has been reimagined as a luxury wellness destination featuring many city firsts in wellness.

A new indoor track, a 10,000-square-foot fitness floor with turf for functional fitness classes and plenty of traditional fitness spaces are available for member use. A new rooftop terrace and cafe with a balcony overlooking Broad Street offer social elements. Lifestyle spaces that blend social with leisure and sport include golf simulators, pickleball and squash courts. New programmatic services range from nutrition, physical therapy and preventative programming.

A Plant-forward Destination Dinner

Kiddo is a new dining destination for plant-forward dishes and thoughtful cocktails.

Competing for dinner reservations is nothing new in Philadelphia, whose creative, playful dining destinations are regularly awarded culinary superlatives. One of the city’s newest hard-to-get tables is at Pietramala, named to Bon Appetit’s Best New Restaurants of 2023 list. Situated in the heart of the Northern Liberties neighborhood and helmed by Chef-owner Ian Graye, Pietramala focuses on creative iterations of locally sourced produce.

Its space was previously home to famous Philadelphia vegan destination Blackbird Pizza, before being transformed from a greasy pizza shop to an intimate, thoughtful showcase for seasonal, local, artisan-made and plant-based dining. Additional nearby destinations for thoughtful, plant-forward dining include Vedge, Philadelphia’s best-known vegan fine-dining restaurant, and Kiddo, a delightful, sustainable eatery focused on featuring local ingredients.
