Fusion Fest returns to South Bend this weekend, with safety as a top priority

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Fusion Fest is returning to South Bend for its second year, bringing together global cultures for the community.

“We knew that it was a hit and that made it easy for us to decide to continue this and make it better which is where we are this year,” City of South Bend Venue Parks and Arts Development Director Amy Roush said.

Last year’s Fusion Fest was a success, drawing in 35,000 attendees with 50 performers and vendors to celebrate different cultures from around the world.  But this year, it’s set to be even bigger.

Howard Park will once again be transformed into a vibrant cultural hub, with large tents representing different parts of the globe.

This year, there will be 90 food and artisan vendors showcasing flavors and crafts from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. Over 50 performers will take the stage across the four performance areas.

There are new attractions this year like zip lines, a drone show, and rock climbing. A trackless train will be in the park this year to make it easier for attendees to navigate the fest.

With thousands expected, safety is a top priority at this year’s Fusion Fest. After some fights at last year’s event, organizers are focused on keeping everyone safe to make sure everyone has a great time.

The two entry points at Howard Park, one at Hill Street and the other at Wayne Street, will have metal detectors to ensure safety.

Festival organizers are encouraging attendees to use clear bags to speed up the security process, though there are no restrictions on bag size or type.

South Bend Police and Fire Departments along with festival security will also be stationed throughout the park to help if needed.

“We just want everyone to understand that if they have any questions or concerns, they can walk up to any of those people, and they’ll be able to assist them,” Roush said.

The Fusion Fest will be open Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
