Here’s what we know now about school cell phone bans
More states are implementing or considering phone bans in schools following guidance from the U.S. Surgeon General on children and social media.
School is back and Clarke Central High School in Athens has taken a bold step to address the issue of cellphones in classrooms.
Following a trend seen in at least 13 states, the school has implemented strict guidelines to create cell phone-free zones.
Good Morning America recently went inside the school to see the impact of these new rules. Teachers have reported that since the change, it has been easier to teach without the constant distraction.
Clarke Central High School on Good Morning America
Good Morning America featured Clarke Central and Clarke County School’s cellphone policy Tuesday morning during its Schools vs. Smartphones series.
The segment featured shots inside of Clarke Central and interviews with students Laila Bolton, Jacob Dortman, Anthony Lonon Jr., Se’Kayia Miller and Will Simpson, along with principal Swade Huff and teachers Ian Altman, Savannah Jenkins and Valinda Miller.
What is the new cell phone rule for students at Clarke Central?
Students are required to turn in their phones at the beginning of each class period (90 minutes), ensuring that classrooms remain focused environments.
However, the transition hasn’t been without challenges. Some students have attempted to bypass the rules by turning in fake phones or older, non-functional phones.
This initiative at Clarke Central High School highlights a growing recognition of the need to balance technology use with educational focus.
