In August 2024, travel activity remained high at Aalborg Airport, resulting in the highest number of travelers for an August month in six years — with a 4.7 percent increase compared to August 2023. At the same time, two major announcements for summer 2025 were revealed, with PLAY returning with their direct non-stop route to Iceland, and Ruby Rejser opening a direct non-stop route to Nuuk in Greenland.
A total of 133,206 people traveled to and from Aalborg Airport in August 2024, with a evident wanderlust atmosphere among those heading to destinations such as the Turkish Riviera, Crete, and Barcelona, or directly to Copenhagen and Bornholm. Additionally, many took the direct flight to Amsterdam, which offers the possibility of traveling across the Atlantic to experience North America.
Route News Tops a Travel-Filled Summer Month
There was once again an increase in the number of international travelers from Aalborg in August 2024. In addition to a plethora of Southern European charter destinations, Amsterdam, Alicante, Barcelona, and the new routes to Nice and Girona were among the routes that contributed to the growth. Moreover, there’s even more on the horizon when both Iceland and Nuuk join the route map in the summer of 2025.
“It’s safe to say that holiday traffic from Aalborg Airport was bustling in August, particularly on international routes to Spain, as well as popular charter destinations across Southern Europe, where we are above last year’s level. It will be exciting to see what the coming months bring — especially after this month’s route announcements to Nuuk and Reykjavik in 2025, the latter of which will highlight onward flights to North American destinations. It’s also worth noting the positive development in domestic traffic to Copenhagen, showing a strong trend for the route,” says CEO Niels Hemmingsen.
Direct Travel Options from Aalborg in Focus
Once again this year, Aalborg Airport hosted the Aalborg Development Forum, a conference for airlines and travel agencies focusing on creating more travel opportunities from Aalborg. This fosters new collaborations and new direct non-stop routes in the future.
“The Aalborg Development Forum is an important event, which I believe will result in new and exciting destinations, but it’s also a way to strengthen existing routes — such as the recently announced direct routes that, with support from tour operators, can have a strong start. Based on the continued rising demand for travel, we see great potential for an even larger offering of routes out of Aalborg Airport,” concludes Niels Hemmingsen.
