WASHINGTON (TNND) — A House GOP-led bill introduced Tuesday would rename Greenland to “Red, White and Blueland.”
The proposal by Rep. Earl “Buddy” Carter, R-Ga., would apply the patriotic new name to all laws, maps and documents referencing Greenland. It would also authorize President Donald Trump to begin negotiations with the Danish Government to acquire the territory.
“America is back and will soon be bigger than ever with the addition of Red, White, and Blueland,” Rep. Carter wrote in a statement on the bill. “President Trump has correctly identified the purchase of what is now Greenland as a national security priority, and we will proudly welcome its people to join the freest nation to ever exist when our Negotiator-in-Chief inks this monumental deal.”
Trump has made repeated calls for the U.S. to expand into Greenland for national security reasons. He has also floated U.S. expansion into the Panama Canal and a takeover of Gaza, sparking concerns from some that Trump may be eyeing a return to imperialism.
Trump has already executed two name changes in his first month in office, reverting Alaska’s Denali to its former title Mount McKinley and changing the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.
The changes sparked a mixed response from the Associated Press, which said it would not refer to the Gulf of Mexico by the new name given its status as an international body of water. The publication agreed, however, to observe the new title for Mount McKinley as it lies within U.S. borders.
The Associated Press reported Tuesday one of its journalists was blocked from an event in the Oval Office over the organization’s Gulf of America stance.
Google Maps this week renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in its map application for U.S. users only.
