The route will strengthen connections to and from Greenland and SAS destinations worldwide. The Scandinavian carrier, which recently joined the SkyTeam alliance, has an existing partnership with Air Greenland, allowing passengers traveling from Greenland to access more destinations on the airline’s network. Speaking about the route, SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff said,

“We’re thrilled to enhance connectivity between Greenland, Scandinavia, and destinations worldwide through our SkyTeam alliance. This new route meets the rising demand for unique, adventurous travel experiences while reinforcing Copenhagen’s position as a key hub for Scandinavian connections worldwide.”

Serving Greenland is also part of the airline’s commitment to increasing travel options in the Arctic and positioning the country as an attractive, emerging destination. Earlier this week, National Geographic named Greenland one of the 25 best places to travel in 2025. While the island is more isolated than some other destinations on the list, Nuuk’s new airport and flights to Europe and North America will make it more accessible.

New and existing routes to Greenland

Locked in ice largely above the Arctic Circle, Greenland is the world’s largest island. SAS’ new route will operate during the summer peak season and highlight Nuuk’s appeal as one of the most unique travel destinations in the world. SAS previously flew to Kangerlussuaq until it halted flights to Greenland.

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, two airlines have regularly scheduled passenger flights to, from, or within Greenland as of October 2024. The flag carrier, Air Greenland, has over 500 weekly flights to several domestic and international destinations. Air Iceland Express, the only other airline, has five weekly flights from Reykjavík, Iceland.

Earlier this month, United Airlines announced its largest-ever international expansion, adding flights to eight new cities in 2025. Among the new destinations is Nuuk, Greenland, which will be served twice weekly as a seasonal offering. The route will commence on June 14, making United the only airline flying directly between the US and Nuuk.

Greenland’s new international airports

Nuuk’s new international airport will launch on November 28, 2024. It is one of three airports under construction, with an additional two scheduled for opening in 2026, in Ilulissat and Qaqortoq in South Greenland. The new facilities will allow for more flights to and from Greenland and shorter travel times between parts of the island.

According to Visit Greenland, the new airport will allow jetliner flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen. It will have a longer runway and new terminal and be equipped with more efficient technology to make landing easier, given the town’s notoriously bad weather.

The service will last from June to September.

As reported by the BBC, the construction of the three airports cost over $800 million, partly financed by Denmark. Jens Lauridsen, Greenland Airports CEO, expects to see more tourism as the new facilities open to flight activity. Air Greenland’s CEO Jacob Nitter Sorensen hopes to launch new flights to European and North American destinations. However, competition will increase as larger international airlines are expected to enter the market.
