President-elect Donald Trump has once again expressed his desire for the United States to own and control Greenland, citing national security and global freedom as the driving factors behind his position.
His comments came as he announced his pick for US ambassador to Denmark, selecting PayPal co-founder Ken Howery for the role. In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump said, “For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity.”
He added that Howery would be a great representative for the US interests in Denmark, saying, “Ken will do a wonderful job in representing the interests of the United States.”
Trump’s interest in Greenland dates back to 2019, when he famously floated the idea of purchasing the territory for its vast natural resources and strategic geopolitical location.
The proposal was met with strong opposition from Danish leaders, particularly Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who responded by saying, “Greenland is not for sale. Greenland is not Danish.
Greenland belongs to Greenland.” Trump’s frustration over Frederiksen’s rejection led to the cancellation of a planned meeting, and the plan was eventually shelved during his presidency.
However, with Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland and his selection of Howery, it seems he is looking to revive the idea if he returns to the White House.
The issue was abandoned under President Joe Biden’s administration, but Trump’s recent comments signal that he is not letting go of his ambitions for the island.
