Little Caribbean market on mission to help victims of Hurricane Beryl in Grenada

A local market in Little Caribbean is continuing its support for the victims of Hurricane Beryl in Grenada. It created a small group of volunteers with one goal and one mission.

“There was nothing, everything was destroyed and I told myself I need to do something, said McDonald Romain, the owner of Labay Market.

Many essential items are going to Carriacou in Grenada to help hurricane victims. It hit the island a few weeks ago, destroying homes, schools and businesses. McDonald told News 12 his market sits on Nostrand Avenue, and he imports most of his goods from the island. Since the disaster he told News 12 his business took a hit.

“It looks like its going to take about three months before somebody plants gets back together and stuff like that, but we are getting some stuff just not as much as we were before,” said Romain.

Since the disaster, McDonald and volunteers have sent hundreds of items in barrels and boxes to Glad Tidings Assembly Church. That’s his sister’s parish, and together they are able to provide comfort to many who lost everything.

“For us, to be able to give up our time to come together and fellowship, and to put these things together so that they can get them and be able to enjoy them and help to make them feel that the people who they have in America appreciate them so much that we are here doing this to help them out,” said Sharon Stewart, a local volunteer.

Anyone who would like to donate money or drop off any essential items, like canned goods, clothing and first-aid kits can do so at Jolie Studios and Labay Market until July 31.
